    Frequently asked questions

    After booking your safari in Tanzania, the next step is applying for a tourist visa. How and where do you apply? What documents do you need? We understand you have many questions. Fortunately, obtaining a visa for Tanzania is easy, and we’re happy to help.

    Good to know: if you travel to Tanzania, you can apply for your visa online or upon arrival.

    The cost of a Tanzania visa for  travelers is USD 50. This visa is valid for three months and can be applied for either online in advance or upon arrival in Tanzania.

    If you apply for the visa online, you pay the fee in US dollars. If you choose to arrange the visa upon arrival, you can pay with either USD 50 or EUR 50. Keep in mind that EUR 50 is worth more than USD 50. Payment by credit card is also possible; in that case, you pay USD 50, plus any credit card fees.

    The Tanzanian government prefers you to apply online, and this has several advantages for you:

    • The process is relatively simple, especially with the explanatory PDF you receive when you book through us;
    • You board the plane knowing that your visa has been arranged and paid for;
    • On arrival, you only need to wait at one counter to have your visa stamped.

    To apply for your visa online, visit the official Tanzanian government website . We recommend NOT applying through other websites; these are often more expensive and sometimes even unreliable.

    We can’t apply for your visa for you, but if you book with us, you’ll receive a dedicated guide to help you through the process. Our travel advisors are also always available for advice. If you submit your visa application online, it can take up to two weeks for your visa to be processed and approved. Make sure you bring a printout or download with you when you go.

    If you submit your visa application upon arrival, you simply need to queue at the immigration desk to have your visa stamped in your passport. Then you collect your bags and are ready to go. Easy peasy!

    If for any reason you can’t or don’t want to submit an online application, you can also do so upon arrival. Brace yourself for some African bureaucracy, but otherwise the process is quite simple:

    • You complete an application form upon arrival at the airport (keep a pen at hand and the address of the Tanzania Specialist and your first accommodation);
    • Apply for your visa at the visa desk;
    • Go to a second counter to pay for your visa (cash or credit card);
    • Go to a third counter and have the visa stamped in your passport;
    • Pack your bags and let’s go.

    As you can see, you have to queue three times upon arrival, while applying online only requires one. This application method can cause some delays, but hey, you’re in the land of “pole pole,” so there’s no rush in Africa! And these days, so many people apply for their visas online that the queue for online applications is much longer than the three queues you have to go through when applying on arrival. So you might even get through faster. But don’t tell anyone we told you this 😉

    These days, most people prefer to apply online to ensure they have their visa before they travel. That’s understandable. If you decide to apply online, make sure you’re well prepared:

    • Submit your application three to four weeks before your trip, in case your application is rejected. This gives you enough time to correct any errors and submit a new application.
    • Make sure you have a credit card ready for payment (including PIN code), or know how to make an international bank transfer;
    • Make sure you have a digital passport photo, a photo of your passport (max 300 kB) and a PDF of your plane ticket (max 1 MB) at hand;
    • Make sure your passport is valid for six months upon your return from Tanzania;
    • If children are travelling with one parent, you will need a written document in English with the other parent’s consent for the trip and then you must upload this into the system;
    • Make sure you have a pen on hand when you arrive in Tanzania, as sometimes you will be asked to fill out a form.

    If you decide to apply for your visa on arrival *, don’t board the plane unprepared.

    • Bring the required amount in cash (in USD or EUR) or use your credit card;
    • You don’t need a passport photo;
    • Please have a pen ready to fill out the application form and the addresses of the Tanzania Specialist and the first hotel where you will be staying;
    • If children are traveling with only one parent, you will need a written document in English with permission from the other parent for the trip.

    *Residents of some countries require a so-called Referral Visa , which cannot be applied for upon arrival. Therefore, be sure to check this before deciding how to apply. Applying for a visa upon arrival may no longer be permitted in the future. Therefore, always check the current immigration guidelines before departure to confirm that this option is still available.

    Pants or shorts? T-shirts or tops? Flip-flops or sneakers? Or maybe even hiking boots? Your trip is booked (or you’re about to book it), and you’re standing in front of your wardrobe with no idea what to pack. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

    Let’s start with some good news: you probably already have most of what you need at home. But of course, you don’t pack the same way when you’re climbing Kilimanjaro or travelling to the world-famous island of Zanzibar.
